Get a Taste of Historic Downtown Richmond

There’s an abundance of new homes and businesses sprinkled through-out the city of Richmond. But did you know there’s also a wealth of historic buildings in the old downtown district? Home to charming boutiques, mom and pop shops and one of a kind antiques — you can stroll through over 200 years of history on the city streets. Here are some favorites, courtesy of richmondecodev.com, to escape the hustle and bustle of Houston and embrace the charm of Richmond.

Sandy McGee's

Sandy McGee's has been a Richmond favorite for over 25 years. Owned and operated by Sandy McGee, the restaurant serves delicious sandwiches, soups, salads, deserts, and provides an expanded dinner menu. The restaurant is housed in a 100-year-old building that was formerly the Post Office Pharmacy.

Lone Star Saloon

The Lone Star Saloon offers a one of a kind saloon atmosphere in the historic district and is known for its live music, great food, and a full bar. The original Lone Star Saloon burned to the ground in 2008 and was painstakingly rebuilt to reflect its historic past and has met all the requirements to remain listed in the Historic Societies list.

Blockhouse Coffee and Kitchen

Blockhouse is more than a modern coffee shop. Blockhouse locally sources many of its offerings, including coffee from the finest roasters in the Houston area, and stocks its shelves and menu with items from artisans from around the community. This dedication to the local community is even seen in its name, which comes from the blockhouse style fort from which Fort Bend County draws its name.

Jaywood Trading Company

Visitors to the Jaywood Trading Company can find more than an excellent inventory of antiques. The store is also the location of History and Haunts of Richmond - a local ghost tour of the historic downtown. Owner Becky Haas provides ghost tours year-round and offers an in-depth knowledge of the area.

Gallery Baroness

Gallery Baroness is a contemporary art gallery located inside of the Fort Bend Postal Office building. Gallery owner Kimberly Cleland designed the gallery to be a place where collectors and artists meet and mingle in a casual atmosphere. Gallery Baroness features new artists each month and allows for 10-15 artists to be shown at a time.
