Wondering where to retire? SmartAsset’s new study can help you pick the best place to buy a home to enjoy for some of the best years of your life! Turns out our very own city of Richmond was ranked among the best places to retire in Texas — based on tax-friendliness, medical care and social life.
To create its list of best places to retire, SmartAsset looked at several factors: the percentage of seniors; the number of doctors' offices, recreation centers and retirement centers per thousand residents; and the effective tax rate — including income and sales tax — of a retiree earning $35,000 a year. These factors were then used to create an indexed score. The data was collected from the U.S. Census, tax software company Avalara and other government websites.
In total, five cities in greater Houston earned a spot on the list of top 10 places to retire in Texas. They are:
- No. 1: Katy
- No. 6: Richmond
- No. 7: Tomball
- No. 8: Webster
- No. 9: Humble
Over the next five to seven years, Houston’s portion of the population that would use senior living and assisted care facilities is expected to grow exponentially. But right now, the region is among the top places to retire in the Lone Star State.
The Houston area is well-known for its medical sector, and many local hospitals and medical facilities have expansions underway, including:
- Houston Methodist, which recently started on $64 million in renovations and expansions to its Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital campus.
- HCA Healthcare’s Gulf Coast Division, which is looking to acquire North Cypress Medical Center. Last year, it purchased three local hospitals from Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. and another from Franklin, Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc.
- Memorial Hermann, which is in the middle of a $650 million expansion of its Texas Medical Center campus.
- The Texas Medical Center, which is planning to break ground on its TMC3 campus next year.
- The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, which has has several projects underway in The Woodlands,League City and the Energy Corridor.
- Birmingham, Alabama-based Encompass, which is building a freestanding 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Katy at The Reserve at Grand Parkway.
